2025 Tandem Hackathon at Scripps
We’re excited to announce the second Tandem - Supercomputing of the Seismic Cycle Hackathon, taking place July 28 - August 1, 2025, at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, with generous support from the Green’s Foundation at IGPP.
Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, this hybrid in-person and virtual hackathon will bring together participants from LMU Munich, Stanford University, and the University of Paris - Sorbonne. The focus remains on advancing the open-source Tandem code for simulating sequences of earthquakes and aseismic slip (SEAS) using high-performance computing. Tandem is available as a Quakeworx App.
This year's five-day event will include:
- Hands-on development of Tandem’s next major release for the Quakeworx Science Gateway
- Implementation of GPU support for the friction solver
- Extension of the elastic domain solver to incorporate viscous rheology
- Preparation of benchmark applications, Quakeworx training material, and a collaborative publication
The hackathon will provide a platform for focused coding, open science collaboration, and community building around next-generation earthquake cycle modeling tools.
